Mountain biking is the best way to experience rural Nepal!

30 Dec, 2009

The Maoists attacks and ongoing 'bandhs' in Nepal might have interrupted the shooting schedules of the cast and crew of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo but that did not dampen their spirits. In fact, they had an amazing time paddling their way into the picturesque locales of Pokhara and its nearby villages.

On one of such days, when the shoot was stalled, Ratan woke up to find that almost all the men folk in the team had gone off on a cycling trip leaving her behind! They chided her that they would not want to take her as a pillion rider.  A visibly miffed Ratan hired her own cycle and with her hair-dresser went on a trip of her own. She rode really high up in the mountains than what others had managed.

She recollects, "A bike is just the perfect vehicle for maneuvering through the narrow streets of the old city. We cycled through Pokhara and mostly met busses and trucks on the narrow mountain road. There are enough places to stay in the villages you pass through. We also stayed in a tea-house one day. It was super exciting. The bandh was actually a blessing in disguise."

"The valleys are surrounded by the snow capped peaks of the Himalayan range. To get a good view of these giants we cycled to the rim of the valley," adds Abhishek.

Paying homage to Pashupatinath

Visiting Nepal and not paying homage to Pashupatinath is unthinkable. When Ratan felt that the Kathmandu trip was jinxed and that they probably would not be able to shoot in Pashupatinath, she decided to pay obeisance to the divine her way.
Ratan had a crazy fan called Tenzing. This lady used to fly to Pokhara from Katmandu to see the shooting. She flew four times at her own cost.  Ratan took Tenzin with her one day and flew to Kathmandu for the darshan. She had covered her face totally to avoid attention. But Ratan's guise backfired at the temple entrance where she was stopped for being a foreigner and not allowed in. She was permitted only after she removed the scarf from her face and revealed that she was Indian.
She was extremely thankful to Tenzin for her help.  She agreed to go shopping with her. The lady was so happy that she forgot that it was her husband's birthday that day!

Ranvijay and Shekhar's fan following

Sachal and Abhishek had four female fans who stalked them wherever they went in Nepal.  Says a source, "This crazy bunch of women used to come to the hotel early in the morning and wait for Sachal (Ranvijay) and Abhishek (Shekhar) to come down from their rooms. They would also come down to the far off village where we shot and would wait patiently till we wrapped up for the day. Both these men felt so humbled by their fan following that they went around shopping with them one day and ended up gifting them presents."
"Would you believe - the Nepali artists that we had hired there are actually depressed now that we are done with the Nepal schedule. It was an amazing experience to shoot in Nepal. The Nepali folks are such sweet, humble and down to earth people... I pray we go back soon for another schedule..." says an elated Abhishek Rawat.
